Empire Series Race 2, May 11-2002

Orchard Beach, New York, the Bronx-

It was another beautiful day in the Bronx for Empire Speed's second race of the season.  The many hours of organization and the good work of the race volunteers show in these very well run events.  If you haven't made the first two races, be there for the final four.  The next race is June 23 at Grant's Tomb in uptown New York City at 122nd Street and Riverside Drive, right off the Hudson River.

Capital Racing made the trip up from DC with team members Jose Escobar, Juan Gomez, Mark Grabowicz, Anthony Lee, Michael Dyas and Rodney Grabinski (honorary member).  The competition was fine with several past and future world team members.  In the Pro-Elite 20K race Capital Racing's Juan Gomez placed 6th and Jose Escobar was 14th.  In the Pro-Masters 15K race Capital Racing's Michael Dyas took 4th with Mark Grabowicz close behind in 5th, Rodney Grabinski in 8th and Anthony Lee in 11th.

These pictures tell the story of the men's Pro-Elite race.  Pat Creveling of EC Beast and Kevin Gehman of Empire Speed made a cooperative break early in the race.  EC Beast liked their chances for the win with Creveling away with Gehman, so the Beast held back the pack when possible and did not work to catch the breakaway.  Other team's skaters attempted to pick up the pace but in the end Creveling nearly lapped the pack and took first, Gehman was not far behind for second and when the rest of the pack came around Steve Carter won the mass field sprint for third.  Click any picture above to see it full size.  For full results visit Empire Speed.
