Caravan Race Series #1, June 29-2002

Baysox Stadium, Bowie, Maryland

The Race Series and Course:  Caravan Skate Shop in Beltsville, Maryland brought back their much appreciated race series for the sixth consecutive year.  Intermediate and Advanced categories skate 10K races, with 2K races for the 12 and under group.  Seven more races follow this season and the awards are better than ever, along with a great new course this year.  Bowie Baysox stadium lot provides 4 left and 1 right turn per lap-- 14 laps per 10K-- fast and mostly flat.

The Advanced Category Men's Races:  We had Capital Racing, Caravan Race Team, Tour/Labeda (Stephen Carter), WOW, SOS, Team Fast Forward and others.  Last week at the Empire race at Grant's Tomb, Carter skating solo beat a field of 12 Empire Speed skaters .  So, having three Capital Racing skaters team against him was not a new experience.  Carter seized an opportune moment to break on the final lap when Capital Racing's Juan Gomez was boxed in, and Carter quickly got a good gap on the pack.  Gomez gave chase and took second to Carter by a skate length.  Capital Racing's Jose Escobar took third, SOS in fourth and Capital Racing's Eric Lisica in fifth.  With two new age groups in the advanced category this year (40-49 and 50+), Capital Racing's Michael Dyas took first in the 40 - 49 masters group despite several doses of Nyquil multi-symptom cold and flu relief taken the night before.
